This paper describes an investigation into active slip control on motorcycles; the object is to design a Traction Control System (TCS) acting on the throttle opening, based on 'Fuzzy Logic Theory', and to test it by means of a full nonlinear longitudinal dynamics motorcycle simulation. The proposed controller computes the optimal correction of the target longitudinal slip that is sent to a conventional linear P1 controller acting on the throttle opening. After a detailed description of the fuzzy control algorithm, simulations are carried out on a full longitudinal motorcycle dynamics model: the results of simulations, performed with different road surface conditions during acceleration transient manoeuvres, show the possibility of self-estimation of the peak adhesion coefficient with different road surfaces.
