A high performance BiCMOS (Bipolar Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) LSI (Large Scale Integrated), in which digital and analog circuits are integrated, was developed for application to a four-cylinder engine control system. This LSI is a system-integrated single chip consisting mainly of an 8-bit microprocessor, program/data memory units, a 10-bit A/D converter, a linear circuit for sensor signal processing, serial communication unit and general purpose ports. A four-cylinder engine control system can be constructed by combining this LSI with an electric power supply IC (Integrated Circuit), transistors and diodes. A prototype of this chip, consisting of 200,000 transistors integrated in an area of approximately 10.7 mm x 10.7 mm, was fabricated in double-metal high voltage BiCMOS technology. The features of the LSI are discussed, as well as the advantages for system construction that have been created by system integration. Considerations of the development technique are also discussed from the viewpoints of production process and design concept. This LSI was applied to a standard type four-cylinder gasoline engine control system. As a result, it was confirmed that the parts-mounting space could be reduced, the number of parts could be reduced, and the cost could be saved.
