A major break-through appears to have occurred in the design of a new peripheral skirt for the U.S. Navy's LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion) amphibious assault hovercraft. A model of this new skirt was the subject of extensive testing this year at the towing tanks of GKN Westland at East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Results obtained from these tests demonstrated unprecedented reductions in rough-water resistance compared to previous designs. The paper describes the development of this new skirt including trade-off studies and results of performance and safety-of-flight tests in the towing tank. The method used and the results obtained from a new non-linear time-domain ACV motion simulation in 3-degrees of freedom are presented. The paper also describes, in some detail, the types of model tests conducted and the analytical procedures used to make corrections and to scale the recorded data for the purpose of preparing predictions of full-scale craft performance. Such procedures have benefited significantly from the extensive full-scale testing of other skirts. The context in which the subject skirt has been developed is described along with the appropriate credit to the U.S. Navy agencies that have sponsored and directed the work.
