A novel process has been developed for the on-site folding, installation and close-fit lining of existing pipelines using thin-walled PE pipes made from conventional pipelines resins. This technique takes advantage of the residual strength of the host pipe to form a composite structure with the liner. The novel site-folding technique is described, and the principles underspinning the thin-walled liner design approach are outlined. The laboratory investigations and structural analyses which have been used to develop valid liner design procedures to address issues such as liner spanning of existing corrosion holes and/or joint gaps, are summarised. A number of site installations which have already been carried out using the technology are reviewed, together with the prospects for its future use in the water, gas and petrochemical industries.
