This paper reports on the extended evaluation of the behavioral effects of driving the ICACAD (Instrumented car for computer assisted driving), a vehicle containing the Generic Intelligent Driver Support (GIDS) system. The experiment was performed in real traffic, and it involved tracing the development of subjects gaining experience with the support over a period of about 10 h on several types of road. The results provided no evidence for the existence of 'early indicators' of later adaptation to the prototype support system. That is, an effect on a given parameter of driving behaviour existed right from the beginning or it did not occur at all. However, the effects themselves were mostly of a nature demonstrating beneficial effects on driving behaviour and mental load from the support per se.
