A detailed method for the prediction of low frequency vibration from freight trains has been produced. The model takes account of the effects of vehicle design, track structure, track profile quality and the propagation characteristics of layered soil. The frequency range over which the model can be used is limitad by the measurement system for the loaded track irregularity profile. The predicted vibration at the track has been shown to agree well with the measurements for the frequency range 5-30 Hz. Below 5 Hz the agreement depends on the parameters for the embankment, and these are not known sufficiently well. The predicted ground vibration agrees less well with measurements due to inaccuracy in the prediction of transfer functions. The model can be used to study the effects of design changes to the track structure and the vehicle suspension. For proposed new railways, the model could be used to indicate locations at which high levels of vibration would be generated.
