The Montreal Protocol agreement for elimination of chlorofluorocarbons has led to the replacement of CFC-12 with the non-ozone-depleting compound HFC-134a in automotive air conditioning. HFC-134a has been globally accepted by all original equipment manufacturers since its performance is equal to or better than that of CFC-12 in new design systems and it enables a dramatic reduction to be achieved in air conditioning system environmental impact. Other working fluids and technologies being considered for automotive air conditioning must compete with fluorocarbon vapor compression systems on the total balance of several factors: environmental impact, performance, safety, cost, size, weight, reliability and serviceability.
