This paper describes the development, design and pass-off tests of a two-stroke, loop-scavenging, high speed and high performance diesel engine characterized by compact structure, light weight, small bulk, modular horizontal cylinder arrangement, simplified cylinder head, easier maintenance, smooth operation, good balance, etc. Owing to the adoption of mechanical-driven turbocharging system, this engine gains desirable output characteristics and accelerating ability to meet more satisfactorily the requirements for light and fast crafts. The tests on the K48E high speed diesel engine with modular and horizontal cylinder arrangement and two-stroke loop-scavenging show that the expected results have been obtained.
