Amid the world-wide recession, shipping-building and related industries are faced with the need for reviewing the conventional production systems. As a breakthrough, many attempts have been made to work out the best ways for small volume production of many types, superseding the so far employed mass production oriented production systems. In actual situation, however, these attempts have not yet born fruit as expected with the marine engine manufacturers. At Daihatsu Diesel Mfg. Co., Ltd., a new theory was established based on the experiences in the past, and adapting this new theory, a new production method called 'DAIHATSU All Tact System' (TACT) has been worked out and put into practice. Explanation with examples has been made in this article with emphasis on the following 3 points: Schedule control and TACT System: Description is made with examples as to the relationship between the entire production system and schedule control. New concept on machining process developed from the TACT system: New arrangement of machining equipment is described comparing with that in the old mass production systems. Theoretical calculation on the TACT assembly system: Description on theoretical calculation is developed on the case where the TACT system is applied on the assembly process which constitutes the base of the whole system.
