The past 20 years since the completion of the first prototype Mitsubishi UE marine diesel engine saw an impressive progress not only in UE engine design technique but also in every specialized field of fundamental research, the fruit of which is the latest two-stage exhaust-turbocharged E type UE diesel engine. In fact, the two-stage exhaust-turbocharging system increased the power rate of UE engine by more than double, from 48 (kg/cm2 x m/sec) of the early engine to 100 of the latest unit. This paper reviews, principally, the progress made in each field of basic engine technology and design technique, and also the design features of UEC 60/125 E type diesel engine with the power rate of 100.8, which is under testing on the test bed.
