A higher degree of turbocharging commonly implies higher mechanical and thermal load and disadvantages in starting, low load operation and acceleration response, thus affecting driveability. Possible improvements are discussed with a particular view to air-cooled engines. Making allowance for predetermined load limits, the influence of a decreased compression ratio on power and specific fuel consumption is shown as well as the effects of parameters like air/fuel ratio, charge air pressure and temperature. Methods are explained for heating the combustion air to improve the starting and part load characteristics and to reduce the hydrocarbon emissions. For the purpose of improving driveability, two variations of conventional turbocharging are considered: In the 'Register' arrangement of turbocharging the commonly used turbocharger is replaced by two or more smaller units in parallel. In the 'Two stage' arrangement the turbochargers are connected in series. The benefits of both systems include a favourable torque curve over a wide speed range and a fast acceleration response.
