The article describes the investigations carried out on cylinder liner deformations in service. The facts which cause thermal deformations are summarized and discussed. The running conditions of the piston in relation to the liner deformation is investigated, taking into account the lateral forces on the piston during the expansion stroke, the scavenge period and the compression stroke. Consideration is taken to the uneven distribution of gas-pressures in port level. In conclusion the measures to improve the running conditions of a piston are enumerated. The second part deals with cylinder liner lubrication. A comparison is made between a newly developed lubricating system and the existing one. The functioning of the so-called accumulating cylinder lubrication, timed by the pressure fluctuations at the quills is described as well as the constructive measures which are necessary.
