This paper introduces a number of developments and improvements made to increase the performance and to meet the many possible uses of the 2-cycle high speed diesel engine. The main objective was to increase output power by increasing the engine speed but without increasing the cyclic thermal load significantly. Other objectives were to improve combustion, to increase components durability and to mate the supercharging system with the optimum matching condition. Moreover careful studies were made on weight reduction of component parts using aluminum alloy particularly concentrating on the cooling system and others. Further improvements were made on the reduction gear system of the engine output shaft in order to accommodate the main propulsion engine for high speed vessels without imposing an undue load on the engine. Practical application of these various improvements has shown good results.
