With the step by step increase in the power rate as well as the improvement in durability and reliability, Mitsubishi UE Diesel engine grew up from the initially developed type 'A' engine to type 'C' and then to type 'D'. This paper describes the development of a new supercharging method for 8 cylinder engines, the tests performed on the high rating single cylinder experimental engine and the study of the turbochargers, as part of the recent fundamental research carried out for the design of type 'C' and 'D' engines. Further it deals with the special features of the design and the test results of the representative UEC and UET type engines.
