The report shows that so far no clear superiority of a certain type of engine for the drive of quick rail cars or for the use in correspondent locomotives can be recognized at all. The situation that for each application in railroad operation various types of engines are available will remain for the near future though not always as much as five as in the described case. The competition among these various types of engines offers great stimulus to all concerned, to improve the respective type of engine as far as possible. These efforts are naturally intensified by competition between the different makes of the same type of engine which necessitates a contest for highest quality. The following tendencies of development can be shown which also will prevail in the coming years. 1. Striving for higher speed: These efforts are not only typical for the engine building but for the whole engineering field, and are far from arriving at an end. 2. Striving for higher supercharging: The report shows that the new principle of high pressure charging with a mean effective pressure of 16 kg/cm2 and more has had a series of results which are considerably beyond the hitherto development. 3. The advance of the truck engine: The greater complication of the multi-engined set is counter-balanced by the easy removal of the engine. Besides, the falling out of one engine is practically of no consequence if reserve in output is sufficient. 4. The fight against noise: This fight is especially important for rail cars serving on long distances. The new development has proved that even rail cars of such little noise can be built to successfully operate them as sleepers. The 'Whisper Engine' of M.A.N. has brought surprising progresses in this field. Nowhere can be seen an end of the hitherto development, and further progress may be expected in the future.
