The main points of this paper are: - A broad outline of significant operational and design features which influence efficient lubrication. It also includes lubricants properties. - An exposition of cases and arguments to illustrate the authors' contention that abuses are essentially a disservice to the operator, indeed to the shipping industry at large. The authors think that marine lubricants are an integral part of the design and operation of marine diesel engines. As such, their formulation ought to be addressed to the real needs, current and anticipated, of the machinery in question. This is only possible if a sound feed-back is obtained from the field. Whenever a lubricant in service is subjected to some misuse or questionable practice, a misleading perspective is easily generated about the characteristics and level of performance required of current and future lubricants. In that context, the engine designer's role in defining lubrication requirements is also seen as crucial if lubricant development is to be of lasting value rather than of transient technical significance. From the standpoint of product application, misuse and questionable practices may add up to a costly 'deferred payment' policy whenever relatively minor savings today translate into major expenses tomorrow. They may also have another long-term negative effect when they help to get rid of the symptoms of a problem rather than addressing its root causes: expediency is exchanged for solution and real progress.
