Marine transporation provides one of the most economical ways to move goods around the world. Since the cost of operating ships is dependent upon the power plant and fuel used, the majority of today's ships utilize the diesel powered propulsion units. The selection of the type of diesel engine used for marine service is greatly influenced by the availability of low cost residual fuels. Marine lubricant formulators, considering both engine designs and fuel quality, must develop lubricants that assure good engine reliability. Diesel engines in marine service have an established reliable life in excess of 20 years, and cylinder liners of between 8 and 16 years, thus reguiring two or three cylinder liner changes per engine. Currently piston ring wear is the limiting factor determining the frequency of overhaul periods. Generally, the piston ring life is from one and one-half to three years, depending upon the fuel used and the lubricant selected to control wear. High temperature corrosion of exhaust valves from vanadium and sodium in the fuel can also limit overhaul periods. (Peters)
