Four A12 piston/shock strut main landing gear forgings were produced and evaluated to prove the feasibility of manufacturing large AerMet 100 alloy forgings for the F/A-18 E/F program. All tensile and KIc tests along with 95 % confidence limits met the MMS-217 and AMS 6532 requirements. Fatigue resistance decreased as the R-ratio changed from 0.33 to -1.00 and as Kt increased from 1 to 3. The fatigue crack growth rate was steady and predictable over the range of Delta K tested. Quenching in oil or 2 bar N2 gas did not cause any significant size change or distortion during heat treatment.
