A closed die forging trial of AerMet 100 Alloy was jointly conducted by Carpenter Technology Corp. and Shultz Steel to produce launch bar forgings for the nose gear of the A12 aircraft. The effects of forging temperature (899 - 1121 Cel) and normalizing (no treatment versus 899 Cel - 1 h, AC) on the ASTM grain size and mechanical properties (smooth tensile and plane-strain fracture toughness) were evaluated. In addition, the depth of scale penetration and amount of decarburization as a function of forging temperature were determined. The mechanical properties of AerMet 100 Alloy and 0.2 % C AF1410 launch bar forgings produced from 899 Cel are also compared.
