The paper describes a non-linear static model of the railway superstructure. Commitee ERRI D 170 used the model presented for investigations of fastening behaviour. The model was also used for design of the new type of concrete sleeper and clip for the Czech Railway. The concept of the mathematic model includes the following assumptions: (a) the ballast has nonlinear physical properties, (b) there are gaps between sleepers and ballast, (c) the fastening is a complicated system with very non-linear resistance, (d) the track is loaded by the lateral wheel forces and vertical wheel forces which applied to the rail head with a certain eccentricity. The assumption (a) leads to Pasternac's model of the sleeper foundation with generally non-linear Winkler's part. The assumption (b) forces solution of the contact problem between sleeper and gravel bed. The contact area is continuously varying during loading process of the sleeper. The solution of the contact problem is based on variational approach. The non-linear energy functional is minimized of Kacanovs's method. The model of the fastening system (c) includes non-linear resistance of the clip and pad and bilinear lateral resistance. The initial system of the fastenng system is assumed to be in the assembled state without external loading. The effect of the rail foot pliability leads to Fredholm's integral equation which is solved according Banach's theorem of the fixed point. The overall track model contains a finite section of the railway superstructure with about 26 sleepers. This section is loaded by the forces (d). 'Static method' is used to establish a system of non-linear equations for the unknown forces in fastenings. Newton-Raphson's method is used for numerical solution of the system of equations.
