A novel absorption refrigeration system has been designed to utilize energy from the internal combustion engine exhaust gases and the engine's cooling-water to provide cooling for passenger car compartment. Refrigerant and absorbent storage tanks are incorporated to provide and adequate transient response to variations in the input energy due to variable engine speed and extreme cooling load requirements. A mathematical model based on mass, species (lithium bromide), and energy balance equations for each component of the system is developed to predict the performance of this absorption cycle. Results show that the system can meet the required cooling load, even for the worst case scnario such as the cool-down period after an initial heat soak of a sub-compact car during engine warm up and idling under extreme environmental conditions. The system constraints are also discussed.
