Auxiliary power units (APUs) are used to provide electrical power and compressed air for aircraft use in commercial air transport. The turbine section of some of these engine models consists of a radial flow turbine rotor and stationary nozzle shroud. The turbine rotor configuration on some of the engine models is an integral casting, made of Mar-M247 material. Service conditions may degrade the airfoil of the rotor by oxidation, erosion, foreign object damage, or rub. In certain cases, repair of the airfoil can extend the useful life of the rotor at lower costs than replacement with a new casting. This paper discusses the development and evaluation of a weld repair for airfoils of Mar-M247 material. The restoration is accomplished by buildup of the airfoil using a power feed plasma transferred arc process. The evaluation includes microstructural examination of repaired airfoils, mechanical property testing of specimens from repaired rotor, and solid modeling of the airfoil for use in estimating the life of repaired airfoils.
