Vehicle development cycles are steadily decreasing in today's automotive industry due to forced customer and market innovation demands. But in spite of this fact the customer expects more sophisticated, more comfortable and mature products. This forces the manufactures to intensify the use of computational techniques to enable an early layout and selection of components before hardware can be actually tested. Computer simulations offer an increased freedom to investigate numerous variants before optimisation using statistical methods. The modelling process and implementation of a proper computer simulation technique for the optimisation of vehicle drive train vibrations is briefly described. The optimisation strategy is explained and an example of an actual engine mount layout optimisation is presented. The principal applicability of the technique is demonstrated.
