Natural gas engines with stoichiometric combustion offer exhaust gas emissions, smell and noise environmental characteristics of a quality which satisfies the requirements until into the next century. Particulate emissions are so low that they can be disregarded. The exhaust gas opacity too is insignificant. The 20 to 25 % higher energy consumption is a consequence of the Otto combustion process used. Alongside the heavy and voluminous pressurised cylinders for the natural gas compressed to 200 bar, this is the major drawback of the CNG (compressed natural gas) system. Energy policy decisions and proposals for reserving city centers only for environmentally compatible drive systems in future will give CNG drive a limited local market chance.
