Simon Gloster Saro manufacture a range of airfield fire tenders. The standard chassis utilise rigid axles and multi-leaf spring suspension. A number of 4 x 4 vehicles have been produced using double wishbone and coil spring independent suspension. The vehicles are virtually identical in other respects to equivalent models on rigid axles. The paper analyses the characteristics of the suspension formats. The independently suspended vehicles displayed improved ride over rough terrain, but rolled excessively, reducing their ultimate stability limits and detracting from the comfort and security of occupants, as well as making it difficult to drive the vehicles safely at speed. SGS developed a passive stability enhancement system to raise the stability of independently suspended vehicles to acceptable levels while not detracting from off-road and rough terrain properties. The enhancement system is now in use on SGS-built vehicles and is the subject of a patent application.
