Fluoropolymers are universally recognized because of their long service life in the most aggressive conditions like high temperature, strong chemicals and solvents. Barrier properties are strictly related to the peculiar chemical structure which affect and enhance the final performance in use of each item made with fluorinated compounds. From these properties, many application have been developed since many years is many different markets and technologies where reliability and fitness for use were the key requirements. Automotive industry has always accepted and supported fluorinated products to fit increasing requirements of higher performance with reliable materials. Technicians and designers ask more for solutions where materials work in severe environments to perform as better as possible. The most severe requirements in the automotive industries are related with some specific problems which affect global performance of the system. General target for new materials are: higher service temperature, higher chemical resistance particularly with fuels lead free, lower coefficient of friction to reduce noise and increase efficiency, Fluorinated products contribute effectively on such view where they are already properly used and also the innovation push to introduce. Recent acquisition in processing of Fluoropolymers allows to introduce the Fluoropolymers performance where they are required specifically at the interface with the hostile environments. The innovative result, obtained at laboratory level and ready to be introduced in the market, is the technology to formulate and apply coatings based on Fluoropolymers on many different substrates to impart the final performance of Fluoropolymers to different items with no sacrifice of substrate performance but enhancing the global characteristics because the fluorocoating practically up-grades the finished item.
