Fluoropolymers, in the form of thermoplastics and elastomers, find a wide use in automotive applications, because of the combination of their high resistance to fuels, lubricants and to elevated temperatures. Examples are fuel and vapor management hoses, fuel tank filler necks, wire insulations, O-rings, diaphragms, seals, etc. This contribution covers the basic chemistry of fluoropolymers used in the automotive industry, their properties and specifics about the main automotive applications.
