A digital, fixed-base, general aviation flight trainer, designed around a single, 8086, 16-bit microprocessor, is described. The flight trainer, which was completed in 1982, has been used in the pilot training program of the Institute of Aviation, University of Illinois since that time period. The capabilities and the initial evaluation of an engineering prototype is discussed. A 4 1/2-year research program, initiated in 1985 and designed to improve the Institute's instrument training program, is presented. The first study involving six subjects explored the feasibility of using the flight trainer for conducting an integrated private/instrument program. A second study, with 13 beginning freshman aviation students, indicated that between 108 - 115 flight hours and 32 - 40 flight trainer hours was required for Private Pilot certification with Instrument rating. A third study with 39 students demonstrated that an accelerated instrument program following Private Pilot certification was feasible and was as effective as the integrated program. The accelerated program which saves students one semester of training has been integrated into the flight training curriculum at the University.
