A multi-segment robot concept is developed in Part I of this two part series for use in space based construction operations. The multi-segment robot is envisioned as a member of a class of large space robots, or space cranes, used in the assembly of advanced spacecraft. In this part, typical robot design issues are explored as they relate to the multi-segment robot. Also, the design, fabrication, and tests of a prototype multi-segment robot are covered in detail. Motion tests are included that compare experimental results with pertinent analytical predictions. This second part, when combined with the first part of the two part series, demonstrates the viability of the proposed concept for addressing the unique problems associated with robotic operations in space.
