The emissions reduction potential of a passenger car Indirect Injection (IDI) diesel engine is compared to results achieved with a prototype Direct Injection (DI) version of the engine. The influence of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) strategies, electronic control and exhaust gas after-treatment are reported. Diesel fuel parameters are evaluated in terms of their affects on 'engine-out' emissions and also exhaust after treatment devices.
