Fibre plaque technology has been developed and brought into production for the alkaline system Nickel-Cadmium (FNC). Apart from stationary applications the fibre technology is also ideal for battery systems supplying electric vehicles. The paper presents new sealed, maintenance free Ni/Cd-cell versions with fibre structured electrodes. The new design contains additional nickel fibre plates as a recombination device (FNC-RECOM) for rapid oxygen consumption. The cell operates below ambient pressure and allows charging times of one hour or less. The high charge efficiency of the system extends the capacity range of sealed Ni/Cd-cells up to more than 100 Ah. The design of the new sealed Ni/Cd-cell will be explained, performance data and experiences in electric and electric/hybrid cars are reported.
