The behavior of offshore skirt piles, installed using the suction method, has been studied by performing centrifuge tests on scaled models. Several aspects regarding pile installation and the behavior of the foundation under static loads have been identified. The centrifuge tests were performed on a 1:100 scale model of a prototype pile, characterized by an outside diameter equal to 15 m and a height equal to 21 m, installed in a clay with geotechnical properties as often found in Italian coastal areas. The tests involved installation of the model skirt pile using suction, measurement of pile displacement under a typical working load and the evaluation of the pile vertical bearing capacity. In-flight cone penetration tests were performed using a miniature piezocone to evaluate the strength of the clay specimen and the reproducibility of specimen preparation by measuring the tip resistance and pore pressure as a function of depth.
