A system and method comprising a suction pile 10 and an impermeable mat 34 for placing on the seabed 12 adjacent the suction pile. The mat is used to prevent piping and seepage effects occurring during installation of a pile in loose, gravel or sand seabed. The pile may include a pump 26, a non-return valve 24 and a suction port 22 for drawing fluid out of the chamber 20 to create a pressure differential to embed a pile into the seabed. Piping may occur creating ratholes 30 under skirt 16 which allows fluid to flow into chamber 20 and be pumped out, preventing the pump creating sufficient pressure differential. A preferably elastic and flexible e.g. rubber, mat 34 is deployed e.g. from a rolled or folded stowed position, to cover the rathole mouth preventing further water being sucked into the hole. Mats may be discrete and deployed as necessary, and removed after use, or may be an annular ring like skirt surround the pile, remaining in place after installation as an anti-scour device.
