New High-Strength C-Mn Hot-Rolled Steel Sheets developed by Sollac (Minimum U.T.S. ranging from 440 to 590 MPa -HR%45, HR50, HR55, HR60) allow the growing demand of the automotive designers for weight reduction to be met. The high strength and improved formability of these steels is based on the ferrite-bainite microstructure obtained by optimised controlled cooling on the run-out table. Formability, fatigue resistance and weldability have been widely characterized by laboratory tests, as well as in industrial conditions, in the case of a suspension arm (HR55 grade) in collaboration with Renault (development of a new vehicle). For this application, low YS/UTS ratio, high hole expansion ratio, as well as regularity of properties along the coil, were particularly appreciated properties. Fatigue tests were performed in in-serivce conditions and confirmed the excellent behaviour observed in the laboratory tests (i.e. Punched Hole Fatigue Test).
