Sandwich structures fabricated with a core of hollow spheres offer performance and cost advantages over honeycomb core structures for many advanced aerospace applications. This lightweight isotropic core provides strength and stiffness with a minimum of weight - a critical requirement in many advanced applications. Cost savings can be achieved by replacing expensive machined solid members, co-bonding the core and panel, reducing consumable tooling and cutting production fit-up and assembly time. Sandwich structures are formed by joining two facing sheets or skins to a core material placed between the two. The resulting structure is strong and stiff, yet lightweight. The core serves the same purpose as the connecting web of an I-beam, keeping the outside skins at a constant distance from each other and absorbing the shearing forces created by bending and loading. The face sheets, by contrast, absorb direct tensile loads.
