Sandwich structures fabricated with a core of hollow spheres offer performance and cost advantages over honeycomb core structures for many advanced aerospace applications. This lightweight isotropic core provides strength and stiffness with a minimum of weight -- a critical requirement in many advanced applications. Cost savings can be achieved by replacing expensive machined solid members, co-bonding the core and panel, reducing consumable tooling and cutting production fit-up and assembly time.
