Development of a range of Yttrium-containing magnesium based alloys is briefly described. The alloy, WE43 (Mg- 4 % Y - 3 % RE - Zr) has a combination of mechanical properties, corrosion resitance, and castability which makes it eminently suitable for aerospace castings operating at any temperature to around 500 F. Special melt handling and casting techniques have been developed for the alloy. These and the alloys major characteristics are described. Successful application of these techniques has been demonstrated by a number of aerospace foundries and typical examples are illustrated. For aersoapce applications, been high corrosion resistant alloys require effective surface protection and assembly practice. However the benefits of using WE43 with intrinsically high corrosion resistance, on subsequent performance of components in aggressive environment is indicated from corrosion testing of practical component assemblies.
