Some of automotive outer panels using sheet steels require (1) superior formability, (2) high dent resistance at reducing the steel thickness, (3) high corrosion resistance, and (4) high image clarity after painting. To meet these demands, Kawasaki Steel has developed laser-dull-textured and organic composite-coated EDDQ (extra-deep drawing quality) steels having bake hardenability. Bake-hardenable EDDQ steels as the base sheet steel have been produced by controlling Nb-carbide precipitation during hot-rolling and continuous annealing. Special organic composite coating with low temperature baking gives no deterioration of their mechanical properties. New laser-dull-texturing technique for reducing waviness on steel surface provides high image clarity after painting thereby maintaining press formability.
