Ford Motor Company is examining the use of different grades of steel for better formability and increased corrosion protection. The goal is stamped parts that can compete in both quality and cost. Vacuum degassed, dent-resistant, deep draw, and more formable high strength steel grades are being developed and made for specific part applications. Uniting the steel and the part in this manner assists to eliminate plant quality issues and create a more satisfied car owner. Zinc-coated steel use is being increased to provide more corrosion protection, better vehicle appearance, and residual value for the customer. The input of steel supplier's expertise is crucial to achieving better stamped panels. Expanded supplier involvement from the start of the car program will aid to eliminate extra costs that could occur later in the program.
