This paper has been prepared to help interested observers and auto industry participants understand the future direction of automotive electronics. It's hoped that both the general and technical reader will enjoy our vision for the year 2000 automobile. The first stage saw the application of diodes, discrete transistors and analog IC's. The second stage was brought about by the availability of digital IC's followed by four, eight, and sixteen bit micro-processors. The third stage, which has already begun, will see increasing use of smart power devices, smart sensors and massive memories. Stage four will begin to emerge late in the 1990's. It's character will be defined by the integration of the automobile - itself by then a fully integrated system - into its external environment.
