Mechanically alloyed (MA) aluminum alloys have been provided to the aircraft market for sevral years, and additional alloys are under development. Prior to widespread acceptance of these products, knowledge of durability and damage tolerance properties is mandatory. The present work addresses these issues by examining tensile, fracture toughness, fatigue, crack growth, and corrosion resistance of Inco MAP alloy AL-905XL forgings. Improvements in structural efficiency compared to competitive or alternative materials are estimated by using a methodology pioneered by Lockheed. Progress on the development of high temperature mechanically alloyed Al-Ti allyos is also addressed using the same methodology.
