In order to improve the wear resistance of titanium, a new wear resistant titanium based composite which is obtained by the Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) hard facing method has been developed. This composite is composed of dispersed TiC particles which provide a small friction coefficient and a tough alloy matrix of betaTi phase. This new composite showed wear resistance superior to a Co-based alloy (Stellite) and hardly wore the opposing steel. In its application to automobile parts, PTA hard facing on the valve face of a titanium alloy intake valve with the powders (Ti-6Al-4V+W2C or Cr3C2) has been tried. Wear resistance of the titanium valve was excellent and equal to a conventional steel valve in an engine test.
