Underwater robotic vehicles (URVs) have become an important exploration tool. As their use and operator training and reliability become important elements in the economic equation, the development of vehicles with greater autonomy is desirable. However, engineering problems associated with the high density, nonuniform and unstructured seawater environment, and the nonlinear response of the vehicle make a high degree of autonomy difficult to achieve. This paper describes subsystems of the vehicle and workstation being designed at the Pacific International Center for High Technology Research, and discussed research issues on the development of autonomous URVs.
