Legislation and competition have forced engine designers to implement new testing methods and tools. The main criteria are dynamic engine and vehicle tests. The ideas have been around for a long time, but dynmaic engine testing has only been possible with considerable mechanical and electrical effort and even then sometimes with in convenience. Modern simulation algorithms and test bed technology are becoming more and more important and are replacing mechanical flywheels, complex tst beds and road tests with their associated dangers. Dynamic tests performed on a dynamic engine test bed are much simpler, and more cost-effective. Due to the much higher reproducibiity, design targets can be reached much quicker.
