Legislation and competition have forced engine designers to implement new testing methods and tools. The main criteria are dynamic engine and vehicle tests. The ideas have been around for a long time, but dynamic engine testing has only been possible with considerable mechanical and electrical effort and even then sometimes with inconvenience. Modern simulation algorithms and test bed technology are becoming more and more important and are replacing mechanical flywheels, compelx test beds and road tests with their associated dangers. Dynamic tests performed on a dynamic engine test bed are much simpler, and more cost-effective. Due to the much higher reproducibility, design targets can be reached much quicker. There are several reports available, which document results and examples showing how dynamic engine test beds are being used to help solve complex design and optimization problems. These reports show how decisive factors can be made transparent to the engine designer.
