The acoustic design of motor vehicles can be greatly enhanced by the use of numerical models. Finite element models have been reviewed in this paper with emphasis on acoustic and elasto-acoustics problems. The described models enable numerical prediction of acoustic pressures and velocities inside compartments from known excitation and damping parameters. These techniques can be used in various stages of product development ranging from preliminary design of vehicle compartments to computer aided reconstruction of acoustic fields from measurements.
