Gearbox radiated noise may be generated in one of two ways: either by the gears, bearings and associated parts within the gearbox, or by vibration transmitted from the engine or other remote ancillaries. This paper describes a theoretical time averaged, broadband, power balance technique that enables these two generation mechanisms to be separated. A theoretical model is used to identify actual transmission paths between an engine and gearbox. The results are confirmed by comparison with those obtained using ad hoc modifications on the running engine and gearbox.
