Controlling engines electronically isbecoming more and more common due to stiffer regulation of emissions. Controlling the fuel into individual cylinders is becoming a rquired function. In today's engine control units (ECUs) fuel metering is a standard function. This task is either throttle body (TBI), multiport (MPI), or sequential fuel injection (SFI). Each of these require CPU controlled outputs based on engine information such as camshaft position, oxygen content in the exhaust gases, throttle position, air density, etc. The placement of these outputs and the ability to move edges with high resolution may make the difference between a poor-running engine and a high-output power machine. The amount of LSI logic to control and monitor engine performance is constantly being integrated. Injection control modules range in functionality from simple fuel metering to sequential fuel injection with distributorless ignition. This paper will review the type of I/O processing power required for engine control today and look at what will be required of I/O processing of tomorrow.
