On road vibration tests on a commercial vehicle cooling package are described and are the basis of a hydraulic rig desined to test package service life in a period of a few hours. Road test results are summarised and show a major vibration mode of plus/minus 1 g at 2 Hz. The rig design is described in outline and comparison is made of rig and road test vibrating patterns. Using the fatigue characteristics of the aluminium from which the charge air cooler is manufactured a means of making service life predictions for the cooling package is proposed.
