An electric power steering system is described here, after giving a summary of the requirements demanded on power-assisted steering systems today in use for motor vehicles. The realization of the electronic control unit, the servo-motor and the sensors is dealt with in more detail. The safety concept and the control structure are identified as essential influencing factors on the overall system design. The simulation results and measurements during driving tests clearly reveal decisive advantages for the employment of an electric front-axle power steering system compared to a conventional hydraulic one. Depending on the individual requirements, electric rear-axle actuation systems will also have a good chance to be used in next-generation motor vehicles.
